Starting Spanish as a beginner is exciting — and easy to overcomplicate. This routine is designed for self-directed learners who use flashcards (Anki or in-app SRS), watch graded comprehensible input, and want to actually speak — not just accumulate passive hours.
Who this routine is for
- Complete beginners to lower intermediate (roughly A1–A2)
- Learners using SRS flashcards for vocabulary
- People watching graded CI video (Dreaming Spanish or similar)
- Anyone who knows words on cards but struggles to use them in conversation
If you're already comfortable having unscripted conversations with natives, you're probably ready to move beyond this — go talk to real people!
The three pillars
- Retention — flashcard review (SRS) so words stick
- Listening input — graded comprehensible input video
- Output — CI+O conversation bounded to your vocabulary (what is CI+O?)
All three matter. Most beginners over-index on one and skip the others.
Daily routine (25 minutes)
1. Flashcard review (10 min)
Review your deck every day. Consistency beats volume. If you're using Anki, keep up with due cards; if you're building vocabulary through quests in Talk To Your Flashcards, review there.
Tip: include example sentences on cards when possible — they help with grammar, not just word recognition.
2. Graded CI video (5 min)
Watch Dreaming Spanish or similar content at your level. Don't pause every sentence — build listening stamina. If a video is too hard, drop down a level. If it's too easy, move up.
Dreaming Spanish and speaking practice explains how video CI fits with output.
3. Add new words (2–5 min, optional)
When you notice useful words in video or conversation, add them to your deck. Don't add everything — pick words you're likely to use.
3–4× per week: conversation practice (10 min)
This is the layer most routines miss. You can start short CI+O conversations even with no vocabulary at all:
- Receive messages using only words you know, plus one new element at a time
- Reply in Spanish
- Complete a quest or free chat session
Adjust speech speed and pauses if listening is hard. The goal is comprehension and output, not perfection.
Weekly overview
| Activity | Frequency | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Flashcard review | Daily | 10 min |
| Graded CI video | Daily | 5 min |
| CI+O conversation | 3–4× / week | 10 min |
| Add new vocabulary | As needed | 2–5 min |
Common mistakes
- Only watching video — input without output; you'll understand more than you can say
- Only doing flashcards — recognition without production; see flashcards to conversation
- Jumping to native podcasts too early — frustration without strict i+1; graded CI first
When to adjust
After ~3 quests: You should have enough vocabulary for short free conversations. Try the Free Chat in Talk To Your Flashcards.
When video CI feels easy: Move up a level. Add native content gradually — YouTube vlogs, simple podcasts.
When conversation feels easy: You may be approaching intermediate. Start mixing in real human conversation alongside CI+O practice.
